Tanzania’s president Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced plans to form a special investigative body to follow up on findings contained in the report of the commission of Inquiry.
The body’s primary mandate is to look into the unrest that broke out during the October 29, 2025 general election.
Speaking at the State House on April 23, 2026, the head of state said that the new body would focus on allegations of criminal conduct highlighted in the commission’s report and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
It will be chaired by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Othman Chande and tasked with examining the causes and impact of the disturbances.
According to the president, the investigative body would widen the scope of accountability by looking into look into reports of alleged abductions involving individuals who remain unaccounted for.
“The body will also investigate reports of alleged abductions where individuals remain unaccounted for, as well as cases involving people affected outside the areas where the unrest occurred,” President Samia said.

It will further review cases involving people affected outside the main areas where the violence occurred.
In addition, the new team will seek to identify individuals believed to have organized, coordinated, or financed the unrest.
Government Support for Post Election Victims
Beyond investigations, President Samia also announced measures aimed at helping victims recover from the aftermath of the violence.
She announced that the government would establish a special support system to finance ongoing medical treatment for those injured during the unrest. many of whom continue to require specialized care months after the clashes.
The programme would provide assistive equipment and prosthetic limbs for those left disabled as a result of the post-election violence.
This initiative is expected to ease the heavy physical and financial burden still facing families affected by the violence.
Moreover, she reaffirmed that her administration is committed to ensuring justice, accountability and long-term support for those affected by the clashes.

Why The Commission was Formed
The Commission of Inquiry was originally formed to investigate the causes and consequences of the disturbances that erupted during and after the October 2025 polls.
Its mandate included examining reports of violence, damage, casualties and other incidents linked to the unrest.
With the release of its findings, the government has announced follow-up investigations into wider issues arising from the post-election clashes.
