Bamburi Cement Secures First Place in Three Categories at Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026

Bamburi Cement Plc has secured top honours in three categories at the Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026, held at Serena Hotel in Nairobi.

Eastern Africa’s leading cement and concrete producer was recognized for its efforts to enhance road safety through driver welfare initiatives, transport management and innovative safety assessment systems.

Organized in partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the awards recognize individuals, organizations and institutions that demonstrate commitment, innovation, collaboration and measurable impact in improving road safety across Kenya.

Commenting on the awards, Bamburi Cement Plc Supply Chain Director, Mr. Mohamed Kassim, said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of employees and transport partners in promoting a strong road safety culture.

“These awards are a testament to the hard work, dedication and vigilance of our employees and transport partners in protecting themselves and other road users. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we remain committed to strengthening our safety practices and ensuring that every journey is undertaken with the highest regard for human life,” said Mr. Kassim.

Three Categories, One Commitment to Road Safety

Bamburi Cement’s recognition spans three areas of road safety, reflecting its integrated approach to protecting drivers, strengthening transport safety management and advancing innovative assessment tools.

  1. Driver Safety and Wellness

Bamburi Cement secured first place in the Driver Safety and Wellness Award, recognizing its systems and initiatives designed to safeguard drivers’ welfare and promote safer driving practices.

Key measures include the Digital Driver Pass, the In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS), a ban on night driving and audited defensive driving training.

Together, these measures strengthen driver accountability, encourage safer driving behaviour and improve oversight of transport operations, helping to reduce risks for drivers and other road users.

  1. Corporate Road Safety Leadership

The company secured first place in the Best Corporate in Road Safety Award, recognizing its comprehensive transport safety management programme.

The programme extends beyond Bamburi Cement’s directly owned fleet to cover more than 1,000 drivers and over 25 transport partners, promoting accountability and consistent safety standards across its wider transport network.

Through collaboration with transport partners and the implementation of measures aimed at reducing road incidents, the company continues to embed safety practices throughout its transport operations and value chain.

  1. Innovation in Road Safety

Bamburi Cement also secured first place in the Road Safety Innovation Award for its Transporter Safety Maturity Audit Tool, a weighted scoring system that evaluates transporters across five road safety pillars.

The tool categorizes transporters according to their level of safety maturity, providing a more comprehensive assessment than traditional pass-or-fail checklists. To date, 16 transporters have been profiled using the tool, which has also been applied to rail operators.

By providing a structured assessment of safety performance, the tool supports the identification of improvement areas and encourages continuous progress in transport safety management.

Strengthening Road Safety Across the Value Chain

The triple win underscores the company’s commitment to embedding road safety into its operations and extending responsible safety practices across its transport value chain.

By combining driver training, monitoring, welfare measures and data-driven assessments, the company continues to promote safer journeys for employees, transport partners and other road users.

The Kenya Road Safety Awards celebrates the individuals, organizations, and institutions making a real difference in road safety across Kenya.

Through the awards, AA Kenya and its partners highlight initiatives that demonstrate commitment, innovation, collaboration and measurable impact in advancing road safety.
